Filers, NTN & returns
How do I become a filer in Pakistan?
Register with the FBR on the IRIS portal (for individuals, your CNIC number is your NTN), then file your annual income tax return with a wealth statement. Once filed, your name is added to the FBR's Active Taxpayer List (ATL).
What is the difference between a filer and a non-filer?
A filer appears on the FBR's Active Taxpayer List because they filed their return. Non-filers pay higher withholding tax on many transactions, such as property purchase and sale, vehicle registration and some banking transactions.
How can I check my ATL (filer) status?
Send an SMS with "ATL", a space and your 13-digit CNIC number to 9966, or use the ATL search on the FBR website.
What is the deadline for filing an income tax return in Pakistan?
Pakistan's tax year ends on 30 June. Individuals and AOPs normally file by 30 September, and companies with a June year-end by 31 December. The FBR sometimes extends these dates.
What documents are needed to file an income tax return?
Usually: CNIC, salary certificate or business income details, bank statements, withholding tax certificates, utility, phone and vehicle tax deduction details, and details of assets and liabilities for the wealth statement.
What is a wealth statement?
A statement of an individual's assets and liabilities, such as property, vehicles, bank balances, investments and loans, filed with the income tax return. It must reconcile with declared income and expenses.
Business & sales tax
Should I register as a sole proprietor, AOP or private limited company?
A sole proprietorship is simplest for one owner, an AOP suits partners, and a private limited company registered with the SECP gives limited liability and a separate legal identity. The right choice depends on owners, liability and growth plans.
Who needs sales tax registration with the FBR?
Manufacturers above the threshold, importers, wholesalers, distributors and certain retailers must register for sales tax. Others may register voluntarily.
Where do service businesses in Punjab register for sales tax?
Sales tax on services in Punjab is administered by the Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA). Sales tax on goods is administered by the FBR. Some businesses need both registrations.
What should I do if I receive a notice from the FBR?
Do not ignore it. Note the response deadline and get professional help promptly so a documented reply can be filed. Missing the deadline can lead to an assessment without your side being heard.
